Le simple fait d'intercepter un message codé, en morse, commençant par la lettre redoublée « B- » permet d'interpréter le sens de la transmission. Dans ce cas, les escorteurs se contentent de surveiller le sous-marin sans l'attaquer immédiatement. Quand ce dernier plonge pour se mettre en position d'attaque, les escorteurs s'approchent, à petite vitesse pour que le bruit du convoi masque leur approche aux hydrophones de leur cible, et grenadent la position estimée.
