- Sir Winston Churchill (/ˈwɪnstən ˈtʃɜːtʃɪl/), né le 30 novembre 1874 à Woodstock et mort le 24 janvier 1965 à Londres, est un homme d'État et écrivain britannique. Membre du Parti conservateur malgré un intermède au Parti libéral, il est Premier ministre du Royaume-Uni de mai 1940 à juillet 1945 puis d’octobre 1951 à avril 1955 ; il joue notamment un rôle décisif dans la victoire des Alliés lors de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Fils de l’homme politique Randolph Churchill, il appartient à la famille aristocratique des Spencer. Engagé dans l’armée, il combat en Inde, au Soudan et durant la seconde guerre des Boers. Il est ensuite correspondant de guerre, puis sert brièvement, pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, sur le front de l'Ouest, comme commandant du 6e bataillon des Royal Scots Fusiliers. Député pendant une soixantaine d’années, il occupe des responsabilités ministérielles pendant près de trente ans. Dans le gouvernement libéral d'Asquith, il est ministre du Commerce, secrétaire du Home Office et Premier Lord de l'Amirauté : il participe alors aux premières lois sociales et s’attaque à l’influence de la Chambre des lords, mais la défaite à la bataille des Dardanelles provoque son éviction. Blanchi de toute responsabilité dans cet échec par une commission d'enquête parlementaire, il est rappelé comme ministre de l'Armement, secrétaire d'État à la Guerre et secrétaire d'État de l'Air par Lloyd George. Devenu chancelier de l'Échiquier, il laisse un bilan mitigé, l'économie n’étant pas son domaine de prédilection, à la différence de la politique étrangère et des affaires militaires. Alors que ses prises de position détonnent, notamment lors de l’abdication d'Édouard VIII, il n’est guère apprécié par les dirigeants du Parti conservateur et connaît une traversée du désert. Il se distingue alors du reste de la classe politique par une opposition vigoureuse à l'Allemagne nazie. Il faut attendre le déclenchement de la Seconde Guerre mondiale pour qu’il revienne au gouvernement, comme Premier Lord de l'Amirauté. Après la démission de Chamberlain, il devient Premier ministre, les conservateurs l’ayant choisi plus par défaut que par adhésion. Refusant de capituler alors que le Royaume-Uni est la dernière nation européenne à résister à la percée nazie, il organise les forces armées britanniques et les conduit finalement à la victoire contre les puissances de l'Axe. Ses discours mobilisateurs (« Du sang, du labeur, des larmes et de la sueur », « Nous nous battrons sur les plages », « C'était là leur heure de gloire », « Jamais tant de gens n'ont dû autant à si peu ») marquent son peuple et les forces alliées. À l’approche de la fin du conflit, il plaide auprès du président américain, Franklin D. Roosevelt, pour qu'il reconnaisse la France libre de Charles de Gaulle, puis obtient à la France une place au Conseil de sécurité des Nations unies ainsi qu’une zone d'occupation en Allemagne. Bien qu'auréolé par son action lors de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il perd de façon inattendue les élections législatives de 1945. Devenu chef de l'opposition, il reste particulièrement actif sur les dossiers de politique étrangère et dénonce dès 1946 le rideau de fer. Les élections de 1951 lui permettent de retrouver la tête du gouvernement. Son second mandat est marqué par le déclin de l'Empire britannique, auquel il tente vainement de s'opposer par une conduite inflexible et des actions militaires. À la suite de la mort soudaine de George VI en 1952, il assiste à l'avènement d’Élisabeth II, dont il est le premier chef de gouvernement. En 1955, à plus de 80 ans, il démissionne de ses fonctions de Premier ministre, son fidèle allié Anthony Eden lui succédant. Malade, il reste député jusqu'en 1964. Sa mort l’année suivante conduit à l’organisation d’obsèques nationales qui rassemblent un nombre inédit d’hommes d'État de par le monde. Les talents d'écriture de Winston Churchill (il a notamment rédigé ses Mémoires sur la Deuxième Guerre mondiale et A History of the English-Speaking Peoples) sont couronnés à la fin de sa vie par un prix Nobel de littérature. Il est également un artiste peintre reconnu.
