- L’opération Battleaxe, également connue sous le nom de bataille de Sollum, est une opération de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, conduite par l'armée britannique en juin 1941. Elle visait à chasser les armées allemande et italienne de l'est de la Cyrénaïque, afin notamment de lever le siège de Tobrouk. C'est la première fois de la guerre où des forces allemandes significatives se retrouvaient sur la défensive. L'opération fut néanmoins un échec, car l'assaut initial des forces britanniques se heurta à de solides positions défensives organisées par le général Erwin Rommel. Les Britanniques perdirent plus de la moitié de leurs tanks dès le premier jour et ne réussirent que sur l'une de leurs trois zones de poussée. Le deuxième jour, ils obtinrent des résultats mitigés en étant repoussés sur leur flanc ouest, mais en arrêtant une importante contre-attaque allemande sur leur centre. Le troisième jour, les Britanniques évitèrent de justesse un désastre complet en se retirant avec succès juste avant d'être encerclés par les Allemands.
