- La synagogue de Doura Europos est un édifice de culte juif situé dans la ville hellénistique et romaine de Doura Europos dans la province de Syrie (à l'extrême sud-est de la Syrie d'aujourd'hui sur le moyen Euphrate, à 24 kilomètres au nord de la cité antique de Mari). C'est l'un des monuments les plus importants pour l'étude de l'art juif dans l'Antiquité, témoin du judaïsme synagogal. Succédant à un premier édifice datant de la seconde moitié du IIe siècle, la synagogue fut reconstruite vers 244-245 et surtout dotée d'un ensemble de fresques figuratives unique à ce jour pour une synagogue antique. La destruction volontaire, mais partielle, de l'édifice lors des travaux de fortification de la ville en prévision d'une attaque sassanide en 256 eut pour résultat la préservation d'une grande partie du décor peint. La destruction de la ville à la fin du siège qui s'ensuivit et la déportation de la population par les Perses mirent fin à l'occupation du site, ce qui explique son état exceptionnel de conservation jusqu'aux premières fouilles archéologiques. Celles-ci intervinrent sous le mandat français en Syrie entre 1921 et 1933 et virent le dégagement complet des vestiges de la synagogue. Les fresques furent déposées au musée national de Damas dont elles constituent l'une des pièces maîtresses. (fr)
