- Le HMAS Sydney est un croiseur de la Royal Australian Navy ayant servi entre 1934 et 1941. Le Sydney connaît d'importants succès durant les premières années de la Seconde Guerre mondiale avant de disparaître dans des conditions entourées de mystère. Il coule le 19 novembre 1941 avec tout son équipage de 645 hommes. Ceci représente la plus grande perte humaine sur un navire de guerre australien. Après plusieurs années de recherches, l'épave du navire allemand l'ayant coulé, le croiseur auxiliaire Kormoran est retrouvée le 12 mars 2008. Le 17 mars de cette même année, le premier ministre australien Kevin Rudd annonce que l'épave du Sydney a elle aussi été retrouvée. Elle repose à 150 km de la baie Shark et à 22,6 km des restes du Kormoran. (fr)
