- Étienne Ier ou saint Étienne (en hongrois : Szent István király, en latin : Sanctus Stephanus, en slovaque : Štefan I ou Štefan Veľký), né vers 975 et mort le 15 août 1038, fonde le royaume de Hongrie dont il devient le roi en 1000 ou en 1001. Canonisé en 1083 pour l'évangélisation de son pays, il est aujourd'hui considéré comme le saint patron de la Hongrie et fêté par l'Église catholique le 16 août.Sous son règne, la Hongrie connaît une longue période de paix et de prospérité, et devient l'une des principales routes pour les marchands et les pèlerins circulant entre l'Europe occidentale et Constantinople ou la Terre sainte. Aucun des enfants d'Étienne ne vit assez longtemps pour lui succéder et sa mort en 1038 provoque une guerre civile qui dure jusqu'à la fin des années 1070. (fr)
