- Paul Belloni Du Chaillu, né le 31 juillet 1831 à Saint-Denis (La Réunion) et mort le 30 avril 1903 à Saint-Pétersbourg (Empire russe), est un explorateur et naturaliste franco-américain. Fils d'un négociant français qui ne le reconnaît pas et d'une mère mulâtre, n'ayant reçu aucune instruction scientifique, entretenant dans ses œuvres des légendes sur sa vie, ses origines, son âge, etc., Paul Du Chaillu effectue d'importantes explorations au Gabon, riches en découvertes notamment zoologiques, botaniques et ethnologiques, à partir des estuaires et des bras de mer de la côte. Si la réalité et la qualité de ses travaux sont aujourd'hui démontrées, ses aventures sont fortement critiquées et mises en doute par la communauté scientifique de son temps. Il est malgré cela le premier voyageur à observer de près le gorille, dans son milieu naturel, et à le chasser ; l'identification scientifique de l'animal avait été proposée quelques mois auparavant à Boston. Ce sont essentiellement ses écrits et ses nombreuses conférences qui le rendent célèbre, mais qui, aussi, discréditent ce vulgarisateur qui aime l'exagération, l'exubérance, le pittoresque et le lyrisme.
