Contrairement à la pratique de l'époque, L'Histoire de Henry Esmond n'est pas édité en feuilleton, mais directement en un ensemble de trois volumes (un three-decker, roman « à trois-ponts »), conçu comme une unité et revu avec soin ; afin de le mener à bien, Thackeray a dû compléter les recherches historiques qu'il a menées sur le XVIIIe siècle pour la rédaction de son ouvrage précédent, Les Humoristes anglais du XVIIIe siècle. À sa sortie, le livre est acclamé comme une prouesse technique : « Je ne peux pas faire mieux… », confirme l'auteur. Depuis que, quatre ans et trois grossesses après leur mariage en 1836, son épouse d'origine irlandaise Isabella Gethin, née Shawe (1816-1893), victime d'une dépression incurable, a été internée, Thackeray vit en célibataire, quoique entouré de ses deux filles et de sa grand-mère ; il fréquente les cercles littéraires de la capitale et entretient une relation d'amitié privilégiée avec Jane Brookfield, l'épouse d'un de ses amis connus à Cambridge, le révérend William Brookfield. Ce drame familial et son amour platonique avec Jane laissent dans sa vie des traces profondes auxquelles le roman fait écho. L'Histoire de Henry Esmond est un ouvrage complexe dont les multiples facettes ont été abondamment discutées. Certains critiques, comme le romancier G. P. R. James, contemporain de Thackeray, veulent y voir un roman d'aventures et un roman historique, d'autres le considèrent comme un roman d'amour autobiographique. Les recherches menées dans les années 1940-1950 ont conduit certains auteurs à penser qu'il était les trois à la fois, ce qui le fait paraître touffu : le professeur Geoffrey Tillotson (1905-1969), universitaire spécialiste de la littérature anglaise du XVIIIe siècle, écrit à son propos qu'il s'agit d'un véritable « puzzle » (a jigsaw).
