- Frederick Edward (dit Fred) Beckwith, né le 16 décembre 1821 probablement à Ramsgate et mort le 29 mai 1898 à Uppingham, est un nageur professionnel anglais. Fred Beckwith domina la natation anglaise dans les années 1850 en conservant son titre de « champion d'Angleterre » de 1852 à 1858. Il s'installa ensuite comme maître-nageur et entraîneur aux Lambeth Baths, dans le sud de Londres. Il forma une bonne partie de la génération suivante de nageurs anglais. Il participa à la préparation physique de Matthew Webb avant sa traversée (la première de l'histoire) de la Manche à l'été 1875. Il était aussi organisateur de spectacles de natation, à Londres et en tournée, jusqu'à Paris. Sa troupe était constituée de ses enfants dont certains, comme Agnes, Willie ou Charles, furent aussi de grands nageurs de la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle. (fr)
