Il est principalement connu pour avoir traduit en anglais des ouvrages écrits en sanskrit, dont le Pañchatantra et la Bhagavad-Gita. Selon le spécialiste des langues slaves (en), traducteur et professeur à Berkeley : « Dans son ensemble, le travail de traduction de Ryder est probablement le meilleur jamais accompli par un Américain.
