L’alphabet phonotypique, aussi appelé phonotype ou alphabet phonotypique anglais, est une transcription phonétique développée par Isaac Pitman et Alexander John Ellis dans le but de simplifier l’orthographe de l’anglais.Une version complète est initialement publié pour la langue anglaise par Pitman en juin 1845, et est étendu en juillet 1845 pour transcrire l’allemand, l’arabe, l’espagnol, le florentin, le français, le gallois, l’italien, le néerlandais, le polonais, le portugais et le sanscrit. Cette version est utilisée durant 6 mois et est révisée plusieurs fois avant la version plus définitive de 1847. Cependant, l’alphabet est révisé plusieurs fois par Pitman, dont notamment en 1856 et 1868.
