- The 3rd and the Mortal est un groupe norvégien de metal avant-gardiste, originaire de Trondheim. Il est formé en 1992 par Rune Hoemsnes, Finn Olav Holthe, Geir Nilssen, Trond Engum, et la chanteuse Kari Rueslåtten. Originellement doom metal, ils sont parmi les pionniers du metal gothique, et font partie des premiers groupes (avec The Gathering) à avoir systématisé le style atmosphérique, ayant recours aux chants féminins éthérés (avec leur EP Sorrow sorti en 1993 et l'album Tears Laid in Earth en 1994). Après le départ de Kari Rueslåtten en 1995, la chanteuse Ann-Mari Edvardsen rejoint le groupe, et deux albums suivent : Painting on Glass en 1996, et le plus expérimental In this Room en 1997. Le groupe évoluera vers des horizons électro/rock plus expérimentaux. Il se sépare en 2005. (fr)
