Il s'agit de la plus ancienne fédération sportive internationale. D'abord appelée Bureau des fédérations européennes de gymnastique, elle prend son nom officiel actuel en 1922. La FIG siège à Lausanne depuis juillet 2008. En 2017, la FIG occupe 31 collaborateurs.
