- Anna Laetitia Barbauld (bɑrˈboʊld, ou peut-être /bɑrˈboʊ/ comme en français, née Aikin, 20 juin 1743 – 9 mars 1825) était une célèbre poétesse romantique, essayiste et autrice de littérature pour enfants anglaise. « Femme de lettres » ayant publié des œuvres de divers genres, Anna Laetitia Barbauld eut une carrière couronnée de succès, à une époque où les femmes écrivains professionnelles étaient rares. Elle était une enseignante appréciée de la et une écrivaine pour enfants innovante : ses livres de lecture comme Lessons for Children ont mis en place un modèle de pédagogie utilisé pendant plus d'un siècle. Ses essais ont démontré qu'il était possible pour une femme de s'engager publiquement en politique, et d'autres femmes écrivains l'imitèrent. Plus important encore, sa poésie joua un rôle fondamental dans le développement du romantisme en Angleterre. Anna Barbauld fut également critique littéraire et son anthologie des romans britanniques du XVIIIe siècle ont contribué à l'élaboration du canon actuel. Sa carrière littéraire prit brutalement fin en 1812 avec la publication du poème Eighteen Hundred and Eleven, qui critiquait la participation de la Grande-Bretagne aux guerres napoléoniennes.
