Cette nouvelle industrie s'affirme comme la convergence du monde virtuel, de la conception num\u00E9rique, de la gestion (op\u00E9rations, finance et marketing) avec les produits et objets du monde r\u00E9el. Les grandes promesses de cette quatri\u00E8me r\u00E9volution industrielle sont de s\u00E9duire les consommateurs avec des produits uniques et personnalis\u00E9s, et malgr\u00E9 de faibles volumes de fabrication, de maintenir des gains. Ces m\u00EAmes consommateurs peuvent ainsi communiquer avec les machines durant les phases de r\u00E9alisation : ce type de production s'appelle \u00AB smart production \u00BB (en). Selon ce principe, dans le contexte de l\u2019automatisation industrielle, cela se caract\u00E9rise par la mise en \u0153uvre de capteurs qui sont les \u00E9l\u00E9ments de base des Syst\u00E8me de contr\u00F4le et d'acquisition de donn\u00E9es en temps r\u00E9el (SCADA). Ils permettent de transformer des grandeurs physiques (temp\u00E9rature, pression, position, concentration, autres\u2026) en signaux, le plus souvent \u00E9lectriques, qui renseignent sur ces grandeurs. Ces capteurs permettent aux robots d'une cha\u00EEne de production de dialoguer et d'adapter l'outil de production aux diff\u00E9rents besoins, de mani\u00E8re non exhaustive, les maintenances, les besoins des march\u00E9s ou les modifications des clients. Outre les aspects technologiques, cette quatri\u00E8me r\u00E9volution industrielle influe sur diff\u00E9rents aspects de nos soci\u00E9t\u00E9s modernes. De nouveaux enjeux apparaissent au travers de cette nouvelle mani\u00E8re de produire. L'industrie 4.0 touche \u00E9videmment l'aspect \u00E9conomique mais a \u00E9galement des impacts sociaux, politiques ou environnementaux. Il pose la question de l'emploi de millions de salari\u00E9s \u00E0 travers le monde. En effet, l'accompagnement des salari\u00E9s actuels et la formation des futurs salari\u00E9s sont \u00E0 prendre en compte. Plus g\u00E9n\u00E9ralement, il est n\u00E9cessaire de r\u00E9fl\u00E9chir \u00E0 la place de l'humain dans cette industrie 4.0. Autre d\u00E9finition : Premi\u00E8re r\u00E9volution industrielle : c\u2019est celle de la \u00AB machine \u00E0 vapeur \u00BB qui va produire pour la premi\u00E8re fois de l\u2019\u00E9nergie \u00E0 volont\u00E9 pour la production et les transports. S\u2019ensuivront des transformations soci\u00E9tales majeures avec de nouvelles institutions et de nouvelles constitutions. Pour notre propos au c\u0153ur de la machine, c\u2019est l\u2019arriv\u00E9e des usines qui repr\u00E9sente la transformation majeure. En effet, l\u2019usine remplacera les ateliers et les \u00E9tablis des artisans. Deuxi\u00E8me r\u00E9volution industrielle : Puis la \u00AB machine-outil \u00BB va reproduire les mouvements de la main de l\u2019homme et en amplifier la force. L\u2019automobile va inventer la fabrication \u00E0 la cha\u00EEne, la Ford T en sera le marqueur universel et dans l\u2019horlogerie, ZENITH produira \u00E0 la cha\u00EEne pour l\u2019arm\u00E9e anglaise des montres bracelets lors de la premi\u00E8re guerre mondiale. Troisi\u00E8me r\u00E9volution industrielle : Puis viendra ensuite, et ceci d\u00E8s les ann\u00E9es 50, l\u2019\u00E9lectronique et l\u2019automatisation. La programmation : c\u2019est la naissance de la \u00AB machine \u00E0 commande num\u00E9rique \u00BB et des \u00AB robots \u00BB. Et maintenant la quatri\u00E8me r\u00E9volution industrielle : Aujourd\u2019hui, c\u2019est une nouvelle r\u00E9volution qui se profile avec le \u00AB machine learning \u00BB. L\u2019Intelligence Artificielle prend en quelque sorte le relais.
