Au milieu de la m\u00EAme d\u00E9cennie le royaume Cumbrien est ravag\u00E9 par le roi Edmond Ier d'Angleterre. Deux fils de Dyfnwal auraient \u00E9t\u00E9 aveugl\u00E9s \u00E0 cette occasion par les Anglais, ce qui semble impliquer que Dyfnwal avait rompu un accord avec son homologue du sud. Une des possibilit\u00E9s est qu'il ait accord\u00E9 aux opposants scandinaves d'Edmond le doit de mettre leur flotte \u00E0 l'abri. Edmond est r\u00E9put\u00E9 avoir c\u00E9d\u00E9 le contr\u00F4le de la Cumbria \u00E0 M\u00E1el Coluim mac Domnaill, roi d' Alba. Cependant l'autorit\u00E9 r\u00E9elle des Scots sur le royaume de Cumbriens demeure incertaine. En 971, Cuil\u00E9n mac Illuilb, roi d'Alba est tu\u00E9 par Rhydderch ap Dyfnwal. Apr\u00E8s cet acte, le successeur de Cuil\u00E9n, Cin\u00E1ed mac Ma\u00EDl Choluim, roi d'Alba, envahit les territoires des Cumbriens peut-\u00EAtre en repr\u00E9sailles de ce meurtreL'ann\u00E9e suivante le roi Edgar le Pacifique tient une grande assembl\u00E9e \u00E0 Chester \u00E0 laquelle participent plusieurs rois du nord. Dyfnwal et son fils M\u00E1el Coluim, sont pr\u00E9sents. Le second est d\u00E9nomm\u00E9 \u00AB Roi des Cumbriens \u00BB ce qui implique dans le contexte de cette rencontre que Dyfnwal avait pr\u00E9c\u00E9demment abdiqu\u00E9 de son tr\u00F4ne. La mort de Dyfnwal est relev\u00E9e en 975 tandis qu'il participait \u00E0 un p\u00E8lerinage \u00E0 Rome. On ignore quand il avait pr\u00E9cis\u00E9ment quitt\u00E9 son tr\u00F4ne. Une possibilit\u00E9 est que Rhydderch lui ait succ\u00E9d\u00E9 avant de tuer Culen. L'autre possibilit\u00E9 ait que son abdication est que le raid men\u00E9 par Cin\u00E1ed ait marqu\u00E9 la fin de la royaut\u00E9 de Dyfnwal. Il est \u00E9galement possible qu'il reste au pouvoir jusqu'en 973 ou 975. IL n\u2019appara\u00EEt pas que, M\u00E1el Coluim ait succ\u00E9d\u00E9 \u00E0 un autre fils de Dyfnwal nomm\u00E9 Owain, qui est mort en 1015. Le souverain suivant Owain Foel, roi de Strathclyde, qui est attest\u00E9 en 1018, doit \u00EAtre un petit-fils de Dyfnwal.
