- L'émigration depuis le bloc de l'Est représente une pierre d'achoppement pendant la guerre froide. Après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, des (en) sont imposées dans les pays du bloc de l'Est, à savoir l'Union soviétique (URSS) ainsi que ses États satellites en Europe centrale et en Europe de l'Est. Dans la majorité des cas, l'émigration légale est limitée au regroupement familial ou pour autoriser des membres des minorités ethniques à rejoindre leur pays d'origine. Les gouvernements du bloc de l'Est soutenaient qu'instaurer des limites strictes à l'émigration était nécessaire pour éviter une fuite des cerveaux. Les États-Unis et les gouvernements en Europe de l'Ouest soutenaient que ces restrictions constituaient une atteinte aux droits de l'homme. Malgré les restrictions, il y eut plusieurs cas de transfuges vers l'Ouest. Quand l'Allemagne de l'Est (RDA) a refermé ses frontières avec l'Allemagne de l'Ouest (RFA), les zones frontalières poreuses entre Berlin-Est et Berlin-Ouest sont devenues un lieu de passage pour les transfuges. L'édification du mur de Berlin, en août 1961, visait à empêcher cette circulation. Par la suite, l'émigration depuis le bloc de l'Est s'est effectivement tarie : seuls quittaient le bloc de l'Est les transfuges illégaux, des personnes d'une origine déterminée dans le cadre d'accords bilatéraux et un nombre restreint d'autres cas.
