Diering lowered his African record to 2:10.39 to take an eighth spot for the semifinals in the preliminary heats, just 0.11 of a second ahead of his teammate Neil Versfeld. Followed by the next morning's session, Diering failed to qualify for the final, as he finished his semifinal run in twelfth place with a time of 2:10.21.Shortly after the Olympics, Diering edged out Tunisia's Oussama Mellouli by nearly two seconds to claim the 200 m breaststroke title at the African Swimming Championships in Johannesburg with a time of 2:16.00.
