Tenne l'incarico per cinquantadue anni.Dedicò particolare attenzione ai testi di Giustiniano, con l'ambizione di coordinare e presentare in ordine logico le massime del diritto romano. Il suo testo "Pandectae Justinianae in novum ordinem digestae" (pubblicato tra il 1748 e il 1752) diventerà un classico degli studi di diritto romano. Nel 1749 ottiene la cattedra di legge dell'Università di Orléans.Nel suo "Traité des obligations" sviluppa una teoria del diritto civile fondato sul diritto morale. Basandosi sulla morale cristiana, si dichiara nettamente contrario alle modalità di interrogratorio dell'epoca, che consistevano in torture di intensità gradualmente crescente.L'intera sua produzione scientifica - nota anche come Trattato di Pothier - è ancora oggi di estremo interesse per il giurista moderno, in quanto essa fu adoperata in modo massiccio dalla commissione cui Napoleone affidò il compito di redigere il nuovo Code civil.È considerato, dai maggiori studiosi del diritto, quali R.Ajello e M. He studied law to qualify for the magistracy, and was appointed Judge in 1720 of the Presidial Court of Orléans, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. He held the post for fifty-two years.Pothier paid particular attention to the correction and co-ordination of the text of the Pandects. His Pandectae Justinianae in novum ordinem digestae (Paris and Chartres, 1748-1752) is a classic in the study of Roman law. In 1749 he was made professor of law at the University of Orleans.He wrote many learned monographs on French law, and much of his work was incorporated almost textually in the French Code Civil.
