Nel 1969 fu insignito del prestigioso premio alla carriera Grand Master Award della Mystery Writers of America (vinto da altri importanti autori di gialli quali Agatha Christie, Rex Stout, Ellery Queen, Georges Simenon e Daphne du Maurier).
