While other artists were becoming more and more abstract, he preferred to paint human figures that were highly sculpted. He was influenced by Hieronymus Bosch and Albrecht Dürer and the Lorraine engraver Jacques Callot. He became friends with the Swiss artist Alberto Giacometti.He died in Paris.

Col tempo la sua produzione si orientò più verso scene d'interno, dove figure irreali comunicano senso di solitudine e desolazione. Dal 1937 cominciò l'attività di pittura en plain air..Sue opere sono conservate presso la Tate Gallery di Londra e presso il Centro di arti visive di Salisbury.
