Peintre abstrait de la même génération que Zao Wou Ki, il a tracé son sillon personnel dans le paysagisme abstrait.

Chu and his schoolmates Wu Guanzhong and Zao Wou-Ki were dubbed the "Three Musketeers" of modernist Chinese artists trained in China and France. He was the first ethnic Chinese member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts of France.
