At the time he received many Republican endorsements, such as the National Republican Senatorial Committee, Martinez, and the 2008 Republican presidential nominee John McCain. His support of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 hurt his popularity among conservatives, and candidate Marco Rubio surged. In April 2010 Crist announced he would drop out of the Republican primary and run as an independent.
