Cofondateur du « projet mondial d'environnement sonore » à l'Université Simon Fraser, Schafer publie en 1977 Le Paysage sonore (originellement publié en anglais sous le titre The tuning of the world). Cet ouvrage, qui se veut en quelque sorte la synthèse de ses recherches en matière d'écologie sonore, lui vaut rapidement une reconnaissance internationale. Il serait le premier à avoir développé le concept de « paysage sonore », en anglais soundscape. (fr)
