Longtemps, ce nom a désigné aussi bien l'île de Crète que sa capitale Héraklion. Ce nom a aussi été adapté en grec byzantin sous la forme Χάνδαξ, -ακος ; le mot français vient de l'adaptation italienne (vénitienne). (fr)
