C’est un des plus vieux handisports : c’est en 1946 à l’hôpital de Stoke Mandeville au Royaume-Uni que des handicapés moteurs ont organisé pour la première fois des courses en fauteuil roulant. Au niveau international c'est directement le Comité international paralympique (IPC) qui est la fédération de référence. En France, la Fédération française handisport (FFH) a reçu délégation le 31 décembre 2016 du ministère des Sports pour organiser la pratique de l'athlétisme handisport. (fr)
