| - Le terme gentilé (/ʒɑ̃.ti.le/) désigne les habitants d’un lieu, d'un village, d'une ville, d'un département, d’une région, d’une province, d’un pays, d’un continent, par référence au lieu où ils habitent ou d'où ils sont originaires. Par exemple, Lyonnais et Japonais sont des gentilés. Un gentilé est donc synonyme de nom d’habitants, et un ethnonyme est synonyme de nom de peuple. L'adjectif « ethnique » s'emploie quelquefois pour désigner un gentilé ou bien un ethnonyme, par exemple dans : « nom ethnique », « adjectif ethnique » ou « appellation ethnique » (chez André Rolland de Denus).
