Mentionné au milieu du XIe siècle par le savant persanophone Nasir e Khosraw, le village était connu des Croisés sous le nom de "Broet". Il appartenait au sultanat mamelouk à la fin du XIIIe siècle, puis, à partir du XVIe siècle, à l’Empire ottoman. Les récits de voyage du XIXe siècle indiquent que al-Birwa possédait une mosquée, une église et une école élémentaire pour garçons (celle pour filles fut construite en 1942). (fr)
