History of Rhodesia (1965–1979)
L’histoire de la Rhodésie du Sud correspond à la période durant laquelle le Zimbabwe actuel (alors appelé Rhodésie du Sud) était une colonie britannique de 1890 jusqu'à l’indépendance du pays en 1980. Les premières incursions portugaises au XVIe siècle en Afrique australe n’ayant pas abouti à l’établissement de zones de peuplement européen, ce n’est qu’avec la « découverte » par l’explorateur britannique David Livingstone des chutes Victoria en 1855 puis avec les explorations de Frederick Courtney Selous dans les années 1870 que les Britanniques commencent à s’intéresser à cette partie enclavée de l’Afrique. La Rhodésie doit son nom et son existence politique et géographique à l’ambitieux homme d’affaires britannique Cecil Rhodes.
